OVERVIEW

Picnic Day is the largest student-run event in the nation, often drawing in crowds of upwards of 70,000 people annually. It is attended by UC Davis students, community members, alumni, and visitors from across the country. Since 1909, this long-standing tradition has taken place in the spring on the UC Davis campus, featuring a signature parade as well as over 200 events.

OUR CHALLENGE

How might we create a platform that allows guests to

make the most out of their Picnic Day?

How might we create a platform that allows guests to make the most out of their Picnic Day?

OUR APPROACH

  1. Existing Picnic Day information is dense and hard to navigate.

  2. Long wait times and the inability to locate activities create overwhelm.

  3. Picnic Day is usually planned socially, both on the day of and in advance.

Through our research, we established three core findings:

UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

Through the ideation phase, we synthesized our research findings and began coming up with digital solutions for the diverse issues we were confronted with. We emphasized common pain points in the Picnic Day experience, considering blue-sky ideas unrestrained by existing event infrastructure.

WORKING TOWARDS A SOLUTION

We sorted and organized our ideas by their viability and value. I led conversation around how we might create a platform that was simple to use, yet still provided comprehensive features that eased people's Picnic Day stress.

After deliberation, we identified the core tenants for our designs. We decided upon a home, map, explore page, scheduling, and ticketing page. Within each of these central hubs, Picnic Day goers would be able to access more advanced features that addressed unmet needs we found in our research, including social planning, accessibility, wait times, and more. We created sketches for our ideas and moved to low fidelity.

A LOOK AT MY SKETCHES AND WIREFRAMES

In my sketches and low-fidelity wireframes, I spent a significant amount of time establishing consistent information architecture. Since organization was listed as a critical pain point, I worked to ensure my work was clear and that important information was emphasized.

FINAL DESIGNS

For our final designs, we implemented a design system that reflected the playful theme of the event. I worked individually on the home, explore, and event pages, while also taking lead on card design, information architecture, and social features.
